"A unique saloon bodied pickup, from a distinctly American idea."
In the U.S. there is an abiding love for pickup trucks like nowhere else in the world, and the Chevrolet El Camino was a unique saloon pickup created to satisfy this market.
The 2nd generation 1967 El Camino was based on the popular Chevrolet Chevelle mid-size saloon. Due to this base, its ride quality is considerably superior to that of a pure truck, and its generous, roomy interior was very comfortable.
Pickup trucks only require 2 doors as opposed to a 4-door saloon, and the rear seats can be omitted as well. This helps in reducing production costs, and makes it possible to lower the selling price. The stylish and relatively inexpensive El Camino sold very well because of this, and became one of the most popular cars on the market.
With the U.S. market in the late 1960s in the midst of a muscle car boom, many 2-door, front-engine RWD saloons were being powered by high-displacement, high-torque engines. Going with this flow, the SS 396 was added to the popular El Camino lineup.
The engine was 396 cubic inches, a 6.5 L high-displacement V8. This pushrod engine produced over 320 BHP, giving the El Camino some serious acceleration performance. The El Camino SS was on par or even better in performance than the Chevelle SS with the same engine.
Massive torque from an American V8, matched with unique styling - and of course you could load it up with anything you needed to carry. The El Camino SS 396 was a fast, convenient, and ultra-cool muscle pickup.
